O diabo, a serpente e a queda - II

- We are free participants in the divine plan, (but) our freedom does not determine us all at once. It sets us down a particular path.
- Our freedom is real; we must decide to move our feet in one direction or the other. But that freedom is reactive or responsive, not executive or commanding.
- This is why human freedom never provides a sufficient explanation for the march toward sin - or the countermarch toward righteousness.
- We can follow much further than we can lead.

R.R. Reno, Genesis, 2010, 83
O diabo, a serpente e a queda - I

- As human beings, our acts are voluntary or free insofar as they are motivated. An unmotivated act is accidental, not free. But as embodied rational beings, we are motivated by what we perceive and by conclusions we draw from our engagement with the world. (…) If this is so, then the first transgression must have been motivated by something perceived in the garden.
- Because our freedom is embodied and responsive rather than purely spiritual and originative, if the serpent is just another bodily creature in the world, then the temptation toward primal sin follows as a consequence of the way God creates. He makes us free in a certain way, but the created order contains realities and impulses that are intrinsically tempting and out of balance.
- If the serpent is just an animal, then sin emerges out of the human encounter with the natural order.
- (On the contrary) If we suppose the existence of a fallen angel, then we have a way of giving a more subtle form to the problem of evil.

- The devil (as purely spiritual being) is motivated solely by his choice of evil. The devil falls strictly because of his choice and not because of any other feature or quality of the created order. The first transgression, the fall of the devil occurs in creation, but not because of creation.

Chegámos a isto, amigo. Eis a nossa desgraça.

Vamos...

Manuel Laranjeira, Carta a M. Unamuno, 1908

Considering the many challenges life has to offer, entertaining yourself with your own thoughts for a few minutes seems like one of the easier hurdles to overcome. You could recall your favorite childhood memory, plan your weekend, or try to solve a problem from work. But it turns out that people find this assignment incredibly hard. And, according to new research, they’ll even resort to giving themselves electric shocks to keep themselves entertained.

There are key strategies of indirect attack that the enemy of our souls uses to significantly disrupt our spiritual progress. (...) There is another indirect attack that wreaks havoc on the soul’s ability grow in intimacy with God — noise. In our culture, noise is everywhere. Day after day, our peace is invaded by television screens at gas pumps screaming ads and programming at us, music in stores, and thousands of television, internet and radio encounters that pump this poison into our souls.
(...) Maybe it is time to choose to face the silence, even if it means a bit of spiritual surgery. I have never met anyone who has taken this challenge and has regretted it.
We must be still to know that God is, and to find the healing and fulfillment that can only come through a living relationship with him. Ironically, it is when we are surrounded by silence that we can hear the most.

Sucesso e insucesso individual residem no sucesso e insucesso do todo.

Bergoglio intus in animo

„There was another theologian who died a while back, Rafael Tello. Cardinal Aramburu had always supported (Lucio) Gera, but there were problems with Tello, and for a time he was suspended “a divinis”. When a priest wrote a book about Tello, compiling his unpublished texts, Cardinal Bergoglio, as archbishop of Buenos Aires, participated in the presentation of the book and vindicated him, saying: there was a time when the hierarchy had problems with him; now the hierarchy comes here to present his book“.

„Before going to Rome, he left a document I liked so much I made a copy of it even though I was not from his diocese. It was directed to priests, pastors, and to the directors of educational institutions of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and exhorts them to go out to the street. Meaning, it is not enough to wait in churches for people to come; rather, we have to go out and preach the Gospel. I believe that the name Francis goes beyond poverty, which is the most important. What Francis did was that he reformed the Church with his friars. Francis—Saint Francis of Assisi—preached on the streets. Archbishop Bergoglio, for example, had a huge tent put in the Constitution Plaza, which is a huge plaza that is next to the southern train station, where priests attended to the people passing by, who asked for everything from the blessing of a prayer card to spiritual direction or confession. Meaning, they went out to the streets, there, in the plaza. That is to say, to seek those who are away".

„After his time as provincial and rector, he went for a few months to Germany to get a doctorate, which he did not finish, about Romano Guardini, because he has a lot of regard for Guardini’s theology, above all the classic theme that has been translated [into Spanish] as contrasteidad, but this is not a Spanish word, which would be contrariedad (opposition), but German: Gegensatz. Guardini has a dialectic that is neither Hegelian nor Marxist, a form of dialectic of opposites, in German Gegensatz, and in the plural, Gegensätze. This perspective is presented by Guardini in a book that is called Der Gegensatz, which I have been told has been translated into Spanish as Contrasteidad, where the elements are in a living tension and are never resolved into a synthesis, as some interpret Hegel“.

„He not only encourages popular piety, it is obviously something very important to his pastoral work and theology, and he also participates in this piety, he lives it.“

„He will not be afraid to make changes, and this has been the case since he came out onto the balcony. For some people, this has fallen on them like a blow to the body, these very simple attitudes. He, indeed, is an austere and simple spiritual man, but at the same time, if he sees that something has to be done for the good of the Church, he’s going to do it.“

D.B. Hart Series (III)

The Karamazov Complex

Ivan's argument provides a kind of spiritual hygiene.

  • solvent of the semi-Hegelian theology of the liberal Protestantism of the late 19th century, which confounded eschatological hope with progressive social and scientific optimism.
  • solvent of the obdurate fatalism of the theistic determinist and of the confidence of rational theodicy
  • and generally of the habitual and unthinking retreat of most Christians to a kind of indeterminate theism
Voltaire: sees only the terrible truth that the history of suffering and death is not morally intelligible
Dostoievsky: sees that it would be far more terrible if it were morally intelligible

(The doors of the sea, 43f.)

D.B. Hart Series (II)

Easter

Easter is an act of "rebellion" against all false necessity and all illegitimate or misused authority, all cruelty and heartless chance.

It liberates us from servitude to and terror before the "elements"

It emancipates us from fate.

It overcomes the world.

Easter should make rebels of us all.

(The doors of the sea, 81)

D.B. Hart Series (I)

God and Evil

I can imagine none greater than the happy knowledge that when I see the death of a child I do not see the face of God but the face of the enemy.

Chesterton on Democracy

in: Chesterton, O Homem Eterno, Aletheia 2009, p. 86
